Sarajevo once again proved its growing importance on the European judo scene, as nearly 500 young athletes gathered for the 34th International Judo Cup “Vinko Šamarlić.”
Bringing together competitors from six countries and 44 clubs, this international judo competition continues to stand out as one of the leading youth judo events in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Held on April 5, the tournament combined high-level competition with a deeper emotional significance, honoring the legacy of Vinko Šamarlić, a symbol of dedication, courage, and sporting excellence.
Hosted at the Goran Čengić Sports Hall, Sarajevo is increasingly positioning itself as a regional center for judo tournaments and youth development.
From early-age categories to more advanced competitors, the event showcased strong technical skills, discipline, and a clear rise in competitive quality. For a youth judo tournament, this level of accessibility is becoming essential. It connects families and fans worldwide while also increasing visibility for athletes, clubs, and organizers.
The opening ceremony added emotional depth to the event.
Speakers including Omer Osmanović and Samir Avdić addressed participants, while the presence of Šamarlić’s family reinforced the meaning behind the competition.
His story continues to resonate strongly - an athlete who was set to compete at the Olympic Games but chose to defend his country during a defining moment in history.
Clubs from across the region delivered impressive results, highlighting the growing strength of judo in Southeast Europe.
Judo Club Braća Lukač secured first place overall, successfully defending their title. Judo Club Olimpic finished second, while Judo Club Travnik claimed third place.
